The Sphinx

The Sphinx is an Ex-Mystic of an Unknown City. It is unknown where it resides primarily, but it is known to appear in areas in which death is either prevalent or swift to follow. It is a regular Ambassador for the Mystics of TwelveCourts.

Biography

Little is known of The Sphinx’s true origin. It is believed to have been tied to a tower, at one point, though the name has been lost to time. What exactly The Sphinx even is also lies in contention. It is a Mystic, though whether it is Fae or something akin to a powerful Chimera is unknown, and no modern data beyond conjecture exists to provide any clarity. It is, however, undeniably magical in nature.

The sole consistent descriptor of The Sphinx is its general beast like appearance. Its human face is merely a facade, seemingly carved from unknown stone. The head beneath the mask is reported to change from any number of animals, though some believe the true head of the beast is actually the snake that exists as its tail.

Personality, Personal Life and Public Image

The Sphinx is known by a variety of names, all very telling of its general nature. Death bringer, Devourer, The Foreboding, and The Consumed. Its colloquial name, The Sphinx, is connected less to the creature’s appearance (although it can at times bear a striking resemblance) and more to its manner of speech. It prefers riddles and omens, and while it does so in lighter conversation this trait is most prevalent in its forewarnings-- given almost exclusively in veiled speech.

Many have tried to use this intricate language in attempts to predict or perhaps entirely prevent the doom The Sphinx is believed to foretell, but most of these accounts stem not from eyewitness accounts but Metriandan fables and folktales. It is known to be fickle and temperamental, yet surprisingly playful.
