Maldreth Matriad

Maldreth Michelle Matriad (summoned as Lapis Hero of Robasa, Amos Merrit- 39 Eelanrua 9138) is the acting Captain of The Socialist Republic of The Moon and King of The Sun. He is the husband of the Queen of the Sun, Pareidolia Di’or, and widower of the Ruby Knight of Robasa, Madeline Meritt. He is currently being held prisoner by the forces of The Sun, allegedly on The Sun.

Biography

Matriad's early life remains a subject of debate and speculation, with few verifiable details. He is believed to have been born into an elvish family on the planet Xiouf. Matriad claims that he was a Socialist Revolutionary fighting against the “Atkinson Empire” under the pseudonym AtomBird, though none of these claims have been verified. According to Matriad in a televised 9148 interview with Robasan newscaster Sarvo Melatin on the late night show Double Moon, the death that would have preceded his summoning was the explosion of 4 atomic bombs over the Capital of the Atkinson Kingdom, Korias. He allegedly received his letter behind the controls of his aeroplane, Sous La Lumiere De La Lune - Je Le Jette, and was forcibly summoned to Metrianda without him opening the document. The fate of his aircraft remains unknown, though Matriad has, since his summoning, advertised an email that persons on that aircraft or associated with the Xioufen Socialist Resistance Force (XRSF or Xersef) in the years 108580 and beyond can contact. Matriad has not since reported on his findings, though the email is still advertised and its inbox is still approachable. Following his summoning to Metrianda in 9138, Matriad legally changed his name to Maldreth Matriad, reportedly in an effort to distance himself from this past. Maldreth appears to be a homoglyph of his military serial number, M41-D43-TH, and he allegedly returned to the use of his maiden name, Matriad.

Matriad rose to prominence amid a series of major political and military upheavals. He is most infamously associated with the assassination of the Third Chromatic Council of Dragons and the subsequent Mayessal Massacre of 9419, an event that also triggered The Great Reset two years later and the onset of the 500 Year War. During a live-broadcasted Mayessal election held in The Perch or upper Ealie, Matriad, accompanied by an unidentified woman widely presumed to be his former spouse, Pareidolia Di’or, descended aboard the voidships The Sun and The Moon and opened fire on all attendees. The event resulted in the deaths of nearly all 47 attendees, including members of the Council of Dragons, Mayessal candidate Abigail Daisy and several Knight-Assistants and Heroes. Only a handful survived: Emperor Yevie Tenebris Purpumtum, Mayess Kian Shigar, Robasa Mayor Finnigan Leagallow, Emerald Dragon Matonus, and KGRB reporters Gigi Turron, Matthias Revolti, and Pink Pansy Pearl.

In the centuries following the massacre, Matriad has remained a central figure in Metriandan conflict. Public legend labeled him the Traitor King, The Betrayer, Conquest, and Horseman as a result of his actions at Elaile/The Perch and The Old Capital in 9419 as well as his actions in the following years.

In 9942, under his leadership, The Moon formally severed diplomatic relations with The Sun, later establishing a cautious but strategic alliance with the Republic of Metrianda. This shift in alignment is widely credited with altering the course of the war in favor of both The Moon and Metrianda. Since The Moon’s shift in relations and as a result of his suggestions and leadership, several key battles across The Republic have been won, pushing the front lines of the war back from The City of Agora to the City of Sheelad- a significant gain in land for The Republic. While public conscious still openly disregards Matriad and The Moon as allies of The Republic and beneficial in any regard, Kian Shigar and The Heroes of Robasa have openly stated that the allyship they have with The Moon is key to winning the war, and that prior propaganda placing sole fault over the deaths during The Great Reset and The 500 Year War were widely incorrect and disregarded The Sun entirely. Reports from The Sun state that the propaganda was, in fact, correct, and that they have no fault in the events of The Great Reset or The 500 Year War.

Recently, following a significant military defeat for The Moon, Matriad was abducted from a decommissioned museum facility on Moon territory. The operation is believed to have been carried out by hero of The Moon Guy Sandren, who had been secretly affiliated with The Sun and performing espionage on The Kingdom’s behalf. As of the latest reports, Matriad is being held in captivity, though the exact location and conditions of his detainment remain undisclosed. It is widely believed by Moon Officials that he is under the effects of multiple enchantments, though several detractors within The Republic popularly believe that he has “simply returned to being the Dog of The Sun” and “The Moon will follow shortly afterwards”. Both claims are unsubstantiated, though Matriad has been sighted on the front lines in late Myphoen (9943) leading to popular belief that he is, in fact, currently fighting for the forces of The Sun regardless of his will in the matter, thus giving further fuel for the ardent character besmirchment campaigns that continue against Matriad.

Personality, Controversy, and Public Image

Matriad is widely regarded as a charismatic and theatrical figure, known for his sociable demeanor and flair for public engagement. Despite his controversial legacy, he is noted for his ability to make those in his presence, guests or captive, feel at ease. Numerous accounts describe him as attentive and accommodating, often going to great lengths to ensure the comfort of others during personal interactions.

A self-professed enthusiast of strategy games, Matriad is particularly fond of traditional Earth chess, though he has expressed a growing interest in board games from alternate dimensions. His affinity for games is often reflected in his diplomatic style, marked by calculated charm and improvisational wit.

Observers have described Matriad's interpersonal approach as both persuasive and disarming, a quality sometimes referred to as the "Matriad Charm." He is known to employ this charisma strategically; whether navigating political intrigue, managing internal dissent, or influencing the outcome of a casual game. His public persona blends affability with a subtle cunning, contributing to his enduring influence in both political and popular spheres.

From his work in the anti-Council insurrectionist groups to the foundations he’s established to his style of leadership on The Moon- Matriad’s motivations have been largely informed by his desire to “see people free”, in his own words. However, the events of 9399 seemed to shift Matriad’s rationale and demeanour abruptly and immensely. Matriad had several children with Ruby Hero Madeline Merrit in their homeworld of Xiouf, several of which had reportedly died in the conflicts between the XSRF and the Atkinson Kingdom. However, their eldest surviving child, Levone-Likht Merrit, was summoned to Metrianda after Madeline’s passing but before Matriad’s arrival. Levone was the gold hero of the Metallic Councilmember Victory’s city, OffRamp, in Underglass Metrianda for several hundred years prior to her father’s arrival. She was relatively well known in Underglass spheres, primarily for her work in campaigning for the Dr Mayor Oxi Gyn’s mayoral run in The Old Capital and her efforts towards pushing for a Metallic and Chromatic council separation. Victory, a nervous and shy dragon compared to the other members of her council, was rarely seen without Levone, and often worked alongside her in the Heroes’ political efforts. The two were reportedly in a romantic relationship with one another- which was against Council Code. An infraction of this degree would result in the culling of the entire Metallic Council, their mayors, heroes, and government employees. In 9399, following Matriad’s dismissal as Lapis hero of Robasa and promotion to Captain of The Moon, Levone and Victory’s relationship was discovered and reported to the Council of Chromatic Dragons by Councilman Violo and Councilwoman Amberline. Unbeknownst to Levone, Victory was brought to trial, wherein ex-Councilman Yevie Tenebris and Councilhead Bravophae Tenebris campaigned diligently against the remaining councilmembers for Victory and the Metallic Council’s lives. Several other heroes of Robasa were brought to the Perch at the Tenebri’s request to act as character witnesses, allegedly Kian Shigar was of this group. Though, as a result of his recent promotion, Matriad was no longer legally considered a hero and was thusly not allowed to attend nor informed of the existence of the trial. The trial concluded in Victory’s favor, allowing The Metallic Council to remain in power and alive, though with a heavy consequence. Victory was tasked, shortly after the trial ended, with executing Levone in order to ensure the relationship would not continue. Levone, Matriad, and several other heroes of The Overglassian Cities were brought to The Perch, without being informed of the content of the event, and a public broadcast was held wherein Victory was forced to execute Levone. Matriad, having been unaware of the death sentence his daughter had been given, was reportedly incoherent and devastated by the event. After being prevented from approaching his daughter’s corpse he teleported back to Robasa and was not seen for about a month afterward- wherein he promptly crashed a plane he had been piloting into The Glass and was revived in Robasa weeks later. Since his disappearance, many who knew him at the time allege that he “acts unlike himself”, a previously stoic and reserved man he now boasts a flamboyant and ostentatious personality- much like his late daughter. Footage of the execution still exists in the Whima Archives, though many, Matriad included, have asked for its destruction.

Matriad has been accused by multiple sources of infidelity, notably only during his marriage to Pareidolia Di’or. Commentators have characterized Matriad’s extramarital affairs as “deeply unprofessional” and “characteristic of a failing leader”, though Matriad has pushed back against those claims, stating “I have no desire to be in this marriage, for all intents and purposes the relationship between me and Di’or is purely diplomatic. All of my relationships have been consensual, private, and began with them approaching me. I do not give benefits to people who pursue a relationship with me, nor are they uniformed on the state of my marriage to Pareidolia”. While none of his affair partners have come forward, several have been credibly identified as Lunar hair stylist Phae Yabavo, Ex-Robasan Hero Apollo, Moon Hero Nightengale Song Oudom, Moon Hero Taylor Able, Moon Hero Muka Mizari, Mayor Crux of Hagurn, Mayor Arthur Himo of City 1, Mayor Adranien of City 4, Agora Hero Rubo Leafen, Edict Hero Merek Redstream, Sun Hero Gigin Ebit, Sun Hero Enterra, and Sun Hero Miranda Everindine. All parties have declined to comment.

Prior to the Fall of the Council of Dragons at his hand in 9419, Matriad had been embroiled in multiple unnamed insurrectionist groups allegedly working against the Fascist government of The Council while he was under their employ. The three primary groups that he allegedly was a member of were behind a mass of terrorist attacks against primarily Chromatic Council military bases on The Glass and city government buildings in Robasa, Agora, and Hagurn. These groups have also been alleged to have armed violent resistance groups in The Underglass, including The Nevergreens of PinchPeakPoint, Deslit, and The Spiral of Justice prior to its dissolution in 9398. Council-Friendly sources reported that those three groups were responsible for upwards of 100 Hero Deaths in the 93rd century alone. Matriad and Di’or’s insurrectionist group allied primarily with The Sun and The Moon is widely considered the worst of the three, having been responsible for the eventual Fall of The Council of Dragons, The Great Reset, and the 500 Year War. While Matriad had been popularly considered to be the sole benefactor and commander of this insurrectionist group for the 523 years since the Fall, recent revelations in 9942 have put his involvement and control over the groups into question, pushing the majority of the blame and control onto his wife Pareidolia Di’or, who he has been reported to have been in a wildly abusive and controlling relationship with for the entirety of the war.

Matriad’s controversy is deep, complex, thoroughly documented and widely unhelped by his behavior at the start of the 500 Year War. On multiple occasions Matriad had been witnessed participating in gruesome acts of terror during the two year period where The Moon and The Sun had total control over Overglass Metrianda following The Great Reset. On one particular occasion Matriad and Mayess Kian Shigar had been in a sole conflict with one another over the remains of Yurhn following The Great Reset. Shigar, who had been impaled on Matriad’s rapier towards the end of the battle, recalls the then King pushing the sword further into her chest and reprimanding her for being “weak, useless, and delusional”, that they “weren’t friends, had never been friends, and will never be friends again”. A surviving hero recorded the event from the sidelines, capturing the prior quotes on video. Matriad claims he has no memory of the event, and adamantly denies the figure in the video being him, noting that his eyes are a dusty blue and the figure in the video has bright gold eyes. Though Shigar claims otherwise, stating that their conversations while fighting contained a “lot of information that anyone other than [Matriad] would not know”. Regardless of the identity of the figure in the video, the quotes and image of Matriad standing over the beloved Mayess and ruthlessly stabbing and degrading a previous close friend became a very strong anti-Moon image for the duration of The War. A screenshot from the video, showcasing the silhouettes of the two in the now-iconic pose, is often posted over kinder images of Matriad and under sympathetic posts. The quote “weak, useless, and delusional” is often pasted over unflattering images of Matriad. After Matriad suffered a stroke in Agora in 9942 and was rushed to the hospital, an image of him in his hospital bed struggling to eat a sandwich taken from outside his window circulated with the quote underneath in impact font, leading to a rush of Anti-Moon sentiments. Allegedly these factored into The Moon’s undocking and retreat from Robasa in later months of 9942 after several Republican citizens stormed past the guardsman at the entrance gate to the ship and attacked several City 4 heroes and Master Gunner Taylor Able- several civilians were injured in the attack, though no Moon Heroes were. This is only one of at least 130 Republic attacks on Moon Heros, civilians, Soldiers, and sympathizers in 9942 alone.

Personal Life

In his homeworld, Matriad was an ardent Socialist and soldier, during his time in Metrianda he continued to rally for his political beliefs, founding the Robasa Socialist Club and eventually successfully establishing a Free Market Socialist Republic on The Moon.

Matriad is an avid fan of music, playing several instruments. He is best known for his work with the violin, so much so that the instrument has become a symbol used by his sympathizers to identify themselves to each other. His music is widely popular, his original compositions garnering millions of listens on music streaming platforms and his covers moreso. Though he refuses to perform in public, stating that the violin is a hobby of his, not a career, and he would much prefer to keep it that way. Matriad is also skilled in the accordion and harpsichord, and is a rather talented vocalist.

Under his previous pseudonym, AtomBird, Matriad has topped multiple Metrianda Online Chess websites charts. His adoration of the game is said to be a product of his childhood, it being one of the few games he was taught to play by his father, Mattis Matriad. Despite his capture, he still remains as the number one highest ranked chess player on the 8 most popular apps and websites in Metrianda.

On Ilondra 19th, 9942, Matriad and Di’or began a very public divorce in Robasan courts. The trial lasted several days, as a result of both parties' prominence in Metriandan life, and ended with a less than amicable separation. Both parties lost custody of their two children- Attikus and Mierdella Di’or- who were put into the care of Robasan Mayor Finnigan Leagallow. While Di’or was refused custody due to the variety of human rights violations she had been accused of and the intense history of severe abuse and manipulation against Matriad she had been proven guilty of, Matriad’s loss of custody was tied to his crippling alcoholism and dangerous home situation- a situation caused and continued primarily by Di’or and her employees. The case has since ended with a restraining order against Di’or for Matriad and with both parties separated legally in The Republican and The Moon courts, though not in The Sun’s. According to recent Solar News, since Matriad’s recent capture by the forces of The Sun, the two have had or are planning on having a second marriage ceremony and are renewing their previous vows in the coming month.

Personal Life

Since his summoning in 9138, Matriad has suffered from a variety of health conditions, reportedly suffering from atrial fibrillation, a second unstated heart disorder leading to increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and seizures, as well as a memory disorder, and magic-based will loss. His time as a Hero of Robasa has reportedly left him with mild brain damage after a poorly cared for concussion he suffered in 9140.

Matriad is a Coqàn who has undergone the Hidden Wing Procedure. While he has not spoken on the subject, it is believed that he suffers from the side effects of the highly-invasive surgery. Matriad has reported severe upper back pain during his time as a Hero of Robasa, and following the Great Reset has not been seen with his wings once- alluding to a full removal of the damaged limbs.

He has been publicaly outspoken about mental health under the employ of The Council of Dragons and founded a suicide hotline specifically for heroes in crisis that still functions in modern day. While he denies struggling with his mental health, it was a topic of popular debate during his divorce in 9942 and redacted court files seemingly imply that a fervent discussion was held regarding his mental faculties and ability to care for his children.

Following his abduction on Eelanrua 24th, 9942, Matriad had allegedly been tortured, killed, and revived by the forces of The Sun, leading to a month-long induced coma following his rescue on Renuclian 38th, 9942.

Matriad was attacked and killed during the Robasan Battle of the Bands in Dedreen of 9942 by Sun spy and vampire Magdelena Pheonix Aisling following a Moon lead investigation into Sun and Tenebris spies utilizing the event as a means to garner intelligence during the 9942 Truce. Matriad was later revived in a local hospital, though reports state that he has been actively strangely since.

Matriad suffered a stroke during a stay in an Agoran hotel in early Alopadora, 9942. While the cause of the stroke is unknown, his Quartermaster, Gaiya Shigar, was heard loudly berating him in his hospital room before storming out.

Accolades

Several colleges and universities prior to The Fall of The Council of Dragons have awarded Matriad honorary degrees. He is an honorary fellow of the Agoran College of Music, University of Robasa, and OffRamp College of Arts. Two schools in Underglass Metrianda have been named for Matriad and several statues have been built for him, though since the advent of the 500 Year War both schools have since been abandoned in The Great Migration and most, if not all, statues have been torn down.

Matriad was presented with several awards, medals, and merritts during his time as a Robasan Hero, including the Medal of Valor, Medal for Distinguished Service, National Medal of Merit and Honor, and the ROYGBIV Heroes Award.

Following The Moon cutting diplomatic ties with The Sun and reestablishing ties with The Republic, The Mayor of Robasa offered Matriad an honorary heroship, which Matriad declined.
